Job Description:

As a Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Specialist, you will be responsible for developing content for the Genetic and Rare Diseases Information Center (GARD) Website at GARD is a program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and serves as key resource for patients with rare diseases, their caregivers, and healthcare providers. The GARD website provides information about 6,500 rare diseases as well as guides on general topics to support the rare diseases community. GARD Information Specialists develop website content to explain very technical medical concepts in plain language about rare and/or genetic diseases. You will also contribute to continuous process improvements to support an efficient curation process. Deep knowledge of genetic and rare diseases and ability to review medical literature and databases to remain current in clinical genetics, research, and support resources. This position can be remote. Proficient written skills are required and experience with writing for the web and/or science writing is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and analyze disease data in the medical literature and relevant databases.

  • Develop written summaries of genetic and rare diseases in plain language.

  • Contribute to continuous process improvements in procedures and standard language.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics.

  • 3 years of experience with clinical genetics.

  • Excellent writing/editing skills

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in website content development.

  • Board Eligible/Board Certification in Genetic Counseling preferred but not required.
