Opportunity summary: MCS (machine control system) specialist, you will be responsible for leading and supporting the Paper Machine Control System (MCS).
The Senior Process Control Engineer position will lead and develop solutions for maintenance and operations, will assist in designing and manage the process control infrastructure, upgrade equipment using the process best practices, and drive the completion of process control projects.
How you will impact WestRock :
Design, implement, and support existing and new process control projects for the Paper Machine Control Systems (MCS).
Utilize machine logic code like that in a Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's), and custom control applications running in a MCS environment-which is a hybrid of different electromechanical systems used to automate machine control systems.
Evaluate and manage processes and equipment for operations to meet or exceed standards
Read and understand piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID's), loop sheets, and electrical drawings to understand processes and potential opportunities for improvement.
Maintain and troubleshoot all hardware associated with the MCS including computers, servers, switches, process controllers, process I/O, PLC’s, drive systems, hydraulics systems, pneumatic systems and servo control systems thin clients, monitors, mouse, and keyboards.
Execute programming and software changes to support new and existing Machine Control systems or components of the MCS process.
Perform all activities to support software system backups, integrations, software repairs and revisions, software updates, and system recovery for all IT associated with process control for the entire facility.
Collaborate with various departments to improve MCS control strategies, interlocks, alarms, and graphics for safety of workers, safety of equipment, and maximum uptime.
Maintain the PI interface (historian - Plant Information System) and collaborate with other departments to make sure process data is appropriately captured and updated.
Partner with the process control engineering team to plan MCS upgrades and projects.
Provide ongoing guidance and coaching to process control engineers focused on tools and systems, interactions between functional areas, end-to-end processes, and how various efforts relate to strategic organizational goals.
Use day-to-day issues as teaching moments to build the problem-solving skill set and process control capability of team members.
What you need to succeed:
- Bachelor’s degree related to Process Controls/Automation
Experience with the following:
Valmet DNA engineering tools and hardware experience
General Paper Machine process knowledge to give insight into the controls for these systems
Experience with PLC control systems (such as Allen Bradley)
Self-learner able to adapt to this role with its unique electromechanical interface to Drive systems, Hydraulic systems, Pneumatic systems, and servo actuated systems
Ability to read documentation and diagrams related to various hardware, software, and wiring
(e.g., piping and instrumentation diagrams - P&ID's)
Advanced computer and IT/networking skills including experience with Windows virtual hardware and software knowledge, multi-level networks, and computer virtualization
Strong problem-solving and process-analysis skills to evaluate data and make decisions to drive process improvements
Possess effective communication skills to clearly convey process-related data to operations and management in readily consumable way
Proven track record of collaboration within cross functional teams to achieve a common objective
Willingness to support 24/7 mill environment, including weekend duty rotation
