As a Systems Engineer you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Providing leadership for activities required in the support and implementation of software systems that integrate with the upper level manufacturing and business data systems and the lower level control systems used to manufacture 3M products.

  • Being responsible for initiating and conducting broadly defined technical tasks and programs related to data integration and information flow across multiple platforms in a manufacturing environment.

  • Being responsible for maintaining data systems across multiple platforms to reliably provide information necessary for decision making by production, engineering, and quality departments for real-time and historical data analytics.

  • Supporting plant, site, and divisional operations while planning and implementing software systems around strategic FoF (Factory of the Future) initiatives. The responsibilities range from leadership in software design to working with operators on the factory floor to implement new software concepts in manufacturing.

  • Developing and maintaining scalable data pipelines that will ingest, transform, and distribute numerous data streams and/or batches

  • Maintaining data management frameworks to prevent data lakes from becoming data swamps.

  • Showing passion for new technologies and identifying needs through customer requests and personal observation and working to satisfy those needs through appropriate application of software, hardware and processes and recommend solutions with an eye toward reusability.

  • Actively participating in relevant corporate programs/initiatives, complying with professional and quality standards, complying with corporate policies and procedures, and acting in a manner consistent with 3M’s values and ethical standards.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar major (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Three (3) years manufacturing software systems experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role, but are not required include:

  • One (1) or more years of professional experience as a data engineer, software engineer, data analyst or data scientist in a private, public, government or military environment

  • Working experience in cloud-based software architecture and development; IT systems integration; manufacturing IT systems; web and mobile application development

  • A passion and experience developing SMART Manufacturing (Industry 4.0) and Data Automation for Industrial IoT

  • Experience with Factory Talk View, IFIX or Wonderware HMI and Historian systems

  • Experience with Rockwell or Siemens Process Control Systems

  • Experience with Savigent Software (Workflow)

  • Knowledge or readiness to learn other technologies related to the Microsoft Azure Stack such as the Microsoft Power Platform (including Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) and/or cloud platform solutions at enterprise scale preferably in Microsoft Azure technologies (or AWS)

  • Hands on experience working with Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), big data concept (including Microsoft SQL Server), C#, JavaScript , Python, Web API, REST APIs, ASP.NET MVC, secure computing concepts, designing cloud native applications, DevOps tooling (such as TFS, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Git, Jenkins, Chef, Puppet)

  • Experience with MES (Manufacturing Execution System) integration

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience working in collaborative/distributed software development teams

  • Experience leading development teams, reporting progress, and resolving issues with stakeholders

  • Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage scouting and evaluation of new opportunities and the flexibility to change direction as additional information becomes available

  • Individuals should display leadership, excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation) networking skills, self-motivated and self-directed

Travel: May include up to 25% domestic/international

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized
