SC Department of Public Safety Communications Specialist II in Richland County, South Carolina
Serve as a Communications Specialist on the Operations Desk in the SLED Fusion Center; operate and monitor an all-hour central communications control center.
Operate two-way radio system, computer terminals, telephones, fax machines, and other communications equipment; receive and dispatch information to SLED Special Agents, civilian personnel, and other Law Enforcement Agencies; monitor 800MHz radio system, SLED VHF radio system, security cameras, and state and federal NAWAS phones for inclement weather or national emergencies.
Receive calls from citizens requesting assistance, making complaints against local police and SLED personnel; answer and disseminate tips from all hotlines..
Retrieve information from computer terminals for NCIC information, criminal history records, driver's license records, and vehicle registration to relay to Special Agents; maintain SLED on-call schedules; serve as main switchboard during non-office hours, weekends, and holidays.
Maintain written daily logs, all required special incident forms, and Duty Officer reports as required by SLED; maintain recorder and replay system.
Responsible for the dispatch of SLED helicopters, Arson team, Tracking team, Crime Scene personnel, Bomb team, SWAT team, BAT team, and Special Assignment teams; initiate AMBER Alerts; acts as back-up for Emergency Preparedness Division/State Warning Point in receiving notifications from nuclear, chemical, or other facilities of any potentially unplanned or accidental release of hazardous material, derailments, spills, etc. and immediately notifies pertinent personnel.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A High School Diploma with experience working with the general public, and relevant dispatch experience. A Bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.
Ability to communicate information accurately; to speak clearly and concisely; to understand and follow instructions; and ability to function effectively during emergencies, stressful situations, and periods of heavy communication traffic.
Willingness and/or ability to work night shift, including holidays and weekends. Shift consists of Sunday night through Thursday night midnight-8am.
